As designers getting that balance right is very difficult given the pressure to make a "fun" game. Working on it....and love the process.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18016026243594377089noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3713119466604475386.post-23956501147147192802019-08-07T09:15:29.471-07:002019-08-07T09:15:29.471-07:00Thanks for the comment, David. Where I think there is a problem is when rules ignore things like doctrines or organizational systems that shaped the way different armies operated. This adds more rules but I think necessarily, so that the game simulates something historical. But, yes, less is often more, and much of what a game offers comes from around the table than from the pages of the book. It just takes some effort on the part of the designer to determine how their fast play/easy system needs to be adapted (within the levels of complexity at which the rules are aimed) o best achieve that. For a recent example, I've just been involved in a refight of the Falklands 1982 campaign (air, land and sea) with a very simple and straightforward set of rules that nevertheless captured the essences of the campaign very nicely - and that was in the opinion of two of the operational commanders who took part in the real thing.
